BERRIEN SPRINGS - There was hardly a dry eye in the house Saturday morning as Baroda resident Debra Price took the stage at the Berrien County Relay for Life's opening ceremony to pay tribute to her grandmother.

Price called her cancer-stricken grandmother, Carol Jakubs, her hero.

"It really hurts me to see someone I look up to in pain," she told people at the opening ceremony at the Berrien County Youth Fairgrounds. "I'm not going to lie to you, cheap prom dresses under 100 cheap prom dresses under 100 it sucks. So many people get it, and they don't deserve it."

She urged her grandmother and others with cancer to give up. "Keep fighting, you can do it," she said.

The relay is the prime Berrien County fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The around-the-clock relay ends today.

Price said after the ceremony her grandmother's example had inspired her to become a nurse and to take part in Relay for Life. Price is a nurse's assistant at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

"I've participated in relay ever since I can remember, Discount Headpieces " she said. "It became part of our family tradition.

Now we all are coming together to help her. You really don't realize how important it is until one of your own is down; then it really hits home."

Price said Saturday was the first time her grandmother had gone out in public since starting treatment for throat cancer in March.

Jakubs, a retired hospice nurse from Baroda, has been a longtime relay supporter and committee member.

"It was my goal after I found out I had cancer to be able to come to relay," she said.

She said Saturday's tribute from her granddaughter and the bouquet of roses from the relay committee came as a surprise.

"It's been hard, and it's been tearful," she said of having the disease. "I want to get out and do things. It's hard on this end. It's harder to receive help than to give it."

This year's relay theme was "Once Upon a Cure, unusual evening dresses uk unusual evening dresses uk" and teams decorated tents and booths in a variety of fairy tale themes.

Going into the event, the Township Terminators from Lincoln Township had raised more money than anyone else.

Ray and Jean Mak of Stevensville did that almost by themselves. They asked people to donate to Relay for Life instead of buying them gifts for their 60th wedding wedding anniversary.

Organizers hope to raise at lease $500,000 between the four relay events in the county this year. Berrien County regularly ranks in the top 10 in per capita giving among the nation's cancer relays. The county has finished on top a couple of years and was third in the country last year.

The next relay is the Niles-Buchanan Relay on July 9-10 in Niles. The Harbor Country Relay for Life and Bark for Relay events are set for July 30 in New Buffalo and St. Joseph, respectively.
